The Macallan is the only distillery to age all of its whiskies exclusively in sherry oak casks from Spain. The result is the full, rich, slightly sweet taste and dark, rich color that no other single malt can match. Other distilleries may add caramel coloring to enhance the color of their whiskies. At The Macallan, they don't have to. The rich taste and dark color come from centuries of experience in aging their spirit in oak casks that have been seasoned with sherry. We invite you to try the entire family of The Macallan whiskies. All are made with the same care and tradition, but each is unique in its flavor, aroma, and color. Raise your glass, notice the dark, rich color and take a sip of what is said to be "the most colorful scotch whiskey in the world".

The Macallan Special Reserves
Rare and exclusive treasures for collectors and connoisseurs.

The Macallan Gran Reserva
Named for its close involvement with the finest sherry, this rare malt has emerged from 18 years in a first fill Spanish oak cask suffused with rich and complex spicy characters and a profound depth of character. Malt Advocate magazine rated this as their 1998 Import Whiskey of the Year.

The Macallan 30 Year-Old
A special anniversary malt which began maturing in the era of The Beatles and moon landings! Deep amber in color, rich in dried fruit and sherry, with a lingering spiciness and resinous wood.

The Macallan 50 Year-Old Decanter
From its striking crystal decanter to its peerless flavor, the Macallan 50 year-old is a fitting tribute to the century past and an unmatched delight for the years ahead. Rich and smoky, with the aroma of cloves, coriander, orange and lemons, it is, by any measure, a superlative whiskey.

The Macallan 1946
Distilled more than a century ago, the smoky, peaty character of the rare and exclusive The Macallan 1946 is a legacy of the war years when coal was scarce and the barley was kilned over a combination of local peat and coal rather than just coal alone. Refined and subtle in character, The Macallan's truly individual style is also reflected in its wood and sherry notes and the superb golden topaz hue of this remarkable treasure.

Questions and Answers about The Macallan Cask Strength

What does Cask Strength mean? What are the benefits?
The Macallan Cask Strength is bottled at the strength at which it comes out of the cask, which is approximately 58% alcohol by volume. Most single malts have water added that dilutes the alcohol down to 43%. Tasting the Macallan Cask Strength will allow you to try a Macallan version that is more robust, darker and richer than a similarly aged bottling at 43%.

Why is there no age statement on the Cask Strength? Approximately how old is it?
By Scottish law, if a distiller puts an age statement on a bottle of whiskey, it must be of the youngest whiskey used in the blend. For example, if a whiskey is produced from 99 barrels of 25 year-old whiskies and only one barrel of 8 year-old whiskey, it would have to be labeled as an 8 year-old. To maintain flexibility in production and consistency in product from bottle to bottle, The Macallan has decided not to include an age statement, as it would change often from vatting to vatting depending on the youngest whiskey used in the final product. The average age for the Cask Strength will be approximately ten to twelve years. Surprisingly, many people who have participated in The Macallan's blind tastings have found that the Cask Strength actually tastes older than the 12 year-old!

Why is the Cask Strength more expensive than the 12 year-old?
Mainly due to the higher level of alcohol in the Cask Strength. Federal and state taxes are levied based on alcohol content. The alcohol content in Cask Strength is about 37% higher than the 12 year-old, yet the price is just over 30% higher than the price of 12 year-old. When consumed with water or ice, you'll find that a small quantity of Cask Strength will go a long way!
